Review: Handy Smurf #20832

Handy Smurf rushes to help in an emergency. He swings his hammer like a pro and easily solves any problem! – Schleich online catalogue.

Jack of all trades is possibly the best way to describe Handy Smurf. Wearing blue overalls with a pencil tucked behind his ear while carrying a mallet over his shoulder. In my opinion, Handy is the best one out of the 2021 Smurfs and is going to be a very popular Smurf.

Though Schleich has made other tradesman Smurfs before, I like how they created a new version of Handy. It proves that Schleich can still be imaginative and not rely on old moulds to create a new Smurf.

I would love to see Schleich create a tradesman Smurfette because more diversity we have with the Smurfs the better it is for everyone. Lego can do it with their minifigures why can’t Schleich do it with their Smurfs?

Overall the 2021 Smurfs received mixed reviews. Most found Smurfette with Flower disappointing because she was unstable, preventing her from standing upright unless supported. On the positive Chef and Handy were well received.

Time will tell what collectors will think of the 2022 Smurfs. Maybe it will depend on what type of collector you are; a nostalgic one or someone new to collecting.

Schleich 2021 Smurfs Surprise of the year

Schleich has released six new Smurfs for 2021 once again made in Romania. The theme of each new Smurf is nothing new but I like them. In some cases, it is nice to see a remake on certain Smurfs. I understand some collectors won’t agree though coming up with new ideas for the Smurfs would be no easy task.

#20827 Vanity Smurf with mirror

Schleich hasn’t changed the concept of this Smurf for over the last fifty years. A Smurf is admiring himself in a mirror. However, this one is slightly different to past versions because of the pink flower on his white hat.

#20828 Smurfette with Flower

Sadly this one had so much potential but it failed for the simple fact that it cannot stand up on its own. A cute looking Smurfette is standing a big lavender coloured flower. Let’s hope Schleich remake this, so it doesn’t fall over because it’s quite pretty.

#20829 Good Luck Smurf

This Smurf may look familour to those that purchased the 2020 Smurf with a Sign. Actually on closer inspection you will see that they share the same markings. One could say that the makers were short of ideas when making this Smurf. It’s pleasant enough but not amazing.

#20830 Baby Smurf

Schleich has always had a fascination with Baby Smurfs. Eversince 1984 Baby Smurfs have been a feature with a new one being created regularly. I like this one, especially with the hand covering over it’s mouth and the rattle beside him. One can only imagine why is Baby Smurf looking so guilty.

#20831 Chef Smurf

The appeal of cooking is a global thing, one only has to see how many cooking shows are on television. It has been a while since Schleich has made a Chef Smurf. Like the other Smurfs from 2021, this one is going to make a pleasant birthday present for someone. If anything, a little bit more colour on this Smurf would have been good. For example a little colour representing some food or sauce on his apron would have been a nice touch.

#20832 Handy

Another option for a birthday present, Handy Smurf will appeal to many. It is little unclear what trade is Handy Smurf representing but that’s when the imagination can come into play. All we need now are some new mushroom cottages to complement Handy.

In my opinion, I like the Schleich 2021 Smurfs as they have given a fresh lease of life to some of the more popular Smurfs from the past. The 2020 Smurfs looked a little tired and weird but I cannot say that about the 2021 Smurfs. With a little bit of tweaking of the design and colour the Schleich 2021 Smurf may just surprise you.

2021 Smurfs revealed

Photos shared online this week has given us the first look at the 2021 Smurfs. Up until now all we knew was that there would be six new Smurfs with a classic theme. There has been a mixed response from those online which is not surprising.

So far Schleich has announced that the new Smurfs will be available from July 2021. Good news, online stores like Toydreamer will have them. Wow! http://toydreamer.com.au/search1.asp?searchword=2021+sm&toytype=searching

My thoughts

I am always aware that Smurfs in my collection were not created to be items of display that they have been for me. They were created for children to play with. Though it is disappointing to see Good Luck Smurf looks like Smurf with Sign #20823 from 2020, but I will be still keen to purchase them all. In short, I can’t wait to get my hands on them!

In conclusion, it really doesn’t matter what others think of the 2021 Smurfs but what do you think?

Bunny Smurfs

I have been inspired this week to get to know a little bit more about the Easter smurfs that have been produced over the years. I felt a little ashamed of myself that I knew so little about them and with Easter only a few weeks ago I thought what better time to explore.

The first Easter smurf I collected was Smurf in Bunny Suit. This Smurf is dressed up in a white bunny outfit and presents you with a big green egg wrapped with a yellow ribbon.

Smurf in Bunny Suit was made in three different countries, Hong Kong, Portugal and lastly China. It appears that the same mould may have been used and the only difference is with the paint colours. When you get the chance have a look at the pink paint used on the inside of bunny ears.

It was some time after this I was able to find Smurfette in Bunny Suit. The Easter Bunny Smurfette wears a pink bunny suit and carries a basket of eggs.

Like Smurf in Bunny Suit, Smurfette in Bunny Suit was made in Hong Kong, Portugal and China. The major difference is the pink pvc used, from pale pink to a lighter pink.

Smurf in Bunny Suit and Smurfette in Bunny Suit were first sold as Seasonal pair by Wallace Berrie with the article number 6520. These were both made in Hong Kong.

First sold as Seasonal pair, Smurf in Bunny Suit and Smurfette in Bunny Suit in 1983 by Schleich with article number 20832. These were both made in Portugal.

Schleich produced both bunnies from 1983 to 1986 and then again from 1989 to 1995. In 1996 Schleich made new Easter smurfs with new article numbers.  Sadly the two Easter bunnies were not part of the new Easter themed smurfs. It is unclear why this was.

So if you know someone who adores their smurfs instead of buying them chocolate easter eggs this year how about getting them an Smurf bunny.
